Società Dante Alighieri, Southampton UK
The international Dante Alighieri Society, founded in Italy in the 19th century, has branches throughout the world affiliated to the Central Committee in Rome.
The Southampton Branch was founded nearly 50 years ago, and has about 60 members. In 2020 the Dante Alighieri Society of Southampton and District decided to become independent but solely because it was unable to meet the requirement to conduct language courses.
New members and visitors are always welcome.
Italian Language: Please note the Southampton branch does not offer any formal instruction in the Italian language, but many of our members appreciate the opportunity to meet with other learners of Italian and to hear Italian spoken.
The ability of members in Italian language ranges from fluent to zero. We have more English language talks than Italian ones.
Meetings consist of talks, slide-shows and musical evenings conducted in Italian or English or a mixture according to the programme, and social events (theatre visits, garden parties, lunches). You don't need to be fluent to become a member or to participate.
We usually meet once a month, on the second Wednesday (except in July and August) in Otterbourne Village Hall, north of Southampton just off junction 12 of the M3 motorway. The hall is in Cranbourne Drive off Otterbourne Hill. There is plentiful parking around the hall and we usually enjoy a glass of wine, a cup of tea, or coffee in the evening. Come along and give us a try!
Meetings are from 7.30pm for 8 pm start . Annual Membership: £12 . Admission: Members FREE - Non-Members £4
